Society of Hiroshima

The Mountain Hawk Eagle Society of Hiroshima has pressed ahead steadily with research on the mountain hawk eagle ever since the organization's founding in 1982. When it released its research results in 1992, the achievement was recognized both at home and abroad. Since then, it has played a central role in research on mountain hawk eagles and in activities to protect them, as a representative wildlife-related NGO (non-governmental organization) of Japan, as well as as a think tank for Japan's Environmental Agency.

 Major Activities

In addition to each member's efforts toward monitoring the breeding situation of mountain hawk eagles, the Society has been engaged in a wide range of activities, as listed below:

- Joint investigation to uncover the habits of mountain hawk eagles

- Investigation into the situation in various places with regard to both living habits and habitat environment

- Organization of symposia

- Education of the general public

- Investigation/research meant to help promote the protecting of mountain hawk eagles

- Presentations of research results to relevant academic societies and research journals

- Cooperation with other organizations toward the protection of mountain hawk eagles

- Offering of both public information activities and suggestions to governments for the protection of mountain hawk eagles

- Implementation of concrete protection measures

 Future Activities

In addition to continued investigation (emphasizing monitoring) in regions where efforts have already been taking place, there will be investigation in areas not yet covered, efforts to identify new nesting grounds, etc. And, utilizing the results of such research, the Society envisions assuming a future role as an NGO that practices protection and management -- grounded in scientific data -- of mountain hawk eagles and also of a rich and diverse ecosystem symbolized by the mountain hawk eagle itself.
